Director of Tax


The Director of Tax for Vision Group Holdings (VGH) will be responsible for a broad range of tax related matters from compliance to tax strategy development to tax provision development. The person in this role will have the opportunity to build a tax function within VGH from the ground up. He/she will be responsible for directly contributing as well as managing the activities of our outside tax advisers and preparers. This person will interact with members of the management team, the accounting team and the tax counsel for our PE investor.


(1)   Corporate Income Taxes 

  • Complete and/or assist in the preparation of state and federal tax returns for a large amount of entities which includes partnerships, LLC, and C Corp type entities
  • Work closely with tax preparation firm partner on completion of tax data worksheets and other information requirements in a timely manner
  • Prepare the tax provision calculation for the consolidated company
  • Timely preparation of all extension filings and estimated payments
  • Ensure all tax notices and inquiries are resolved timely
  • Prepare as needed journal entries to record tax transactions
  • Reconcile corporate tax liability and expense accounts


(2)    Monthly Sales and Use Tax


  • Review preparation of internally prepared monthly and quarterly returns
  • Work with tax preparation provider on externally prepared returns
  • Ensure all returns are filed timely and in compliance with state guidelines
  • Verify that all tax notices and inquiries are resolved timely
  • Review monthly staff reconciliations of liability and expense accounts


(3) Tangible Property Taxes

  •  Review annual property tax preparation of approximately 150 renditions currently outsourced
  • Ensure staff provides accurate fixed asset input data for the returns
  • Verify that return payments match expected amounts and are done timely
  • Prepare appropriate accrual schedule to recognize this tax liability monthly


(4) Real Estate Taxes 

  • Review property real estate tax terms contained in leases
  • Oversee or prepare as needed year end reconciliations of monthly property tax payments to actual tax statements and landlord schedules to ensure accuracy
  • Set up accrual schedule as needed for any tax payments not paid on monthly basis


(5) Compliance Matters 

  • Review business license renewals for accuracy and timely payment
  • Ensure calendar of all returns is accurate reflecting proper due dates
  • Review annual report renewals handled by outsourced provider
  • Identify and resolve other tax compliance matters that may arise
  • Manage outside professional firms that support the tax compliance and planning matters.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Certified public accountant
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, including experience in a prominent accounting firm. Experience also within a corporate environment (i.e., “in-house”) is desired, but not required.


Experience and skills required:


  • Experienced in corporate federal and state income tax return preparation and planning, as well as experience with franchise tax, sales and use tax matters.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Detailed oriented with strong reconciliation skills.
  • Ability to work across the organization to coordinate data gathering and data sharing.
  • Ability to manage accounting firms hired to assist the company in tax compliance and planning matters.
  • Ability to prepare and explain clear supporting documents in response to letters and email inquiries from various jurisdictions
  • Software Skills: Experience with Great Plains software a plus; Above average skills with MS Office required with emphasis on Excel; and knowledge on tax software solutions
